Well, I’m a google search today, thanks to Mr. Santorum. Woo hoo!
Michaelangelo Signorile included this blog in a recent column about Santorum’s hypocrisy on LGBT equality, including a ridiculous defense by former Communication Director Robert Traynham an openly gay man. Apparently, Traynham is fine with Rick’s stance on equality because Rick never criticized ‘gay sex.’ ???
First, how does a communications guy not grasp that there is no such thing as ‘gay sex’ and/or that that is the flimsiest argument ever to support a homophobic elected official? I interned in Rick Santorum’s office in 1991 and I can say affirmatively that then Congressman Santorum never discussed gay sex with me.
Second, Traynham is WRONG! Santorum did discuss sexual orientation (well, at least the queer kind) as being a behavior. Does any reasonable person think a federal amendment banning marriage equality is not a condemnation of sexual conduct? Really? Santorum wants to dissolve legal marriages that are legal in the eyes of their state. Santorum is very far out there when it comes to any type of equality issue. It is not a big leap to think that he doesn’t want me to have sex with a woman. Really, Robert? That pretty much destroyed any credibility you have to speak on LGBT issues.
I wish I could embed videos, but I’m having WordPress issues so you’ll have to follow the links to see the Hardball interview.
I also learned the Santorum’s eldest daughter (yep, I hung with when she visited her Dad’s office as a little girl) thinks having gay friends somehow offsets the hate rhetoric. I wonder if her “gay friends” include anyone who makes $35,000, can’t get health insurance for her partner and has been verbally abused for wearing something non gender-conforming? Remember the Bush twins had a gay hair stylist and went to his “commitment ceremony”? Yeah, me too.
What I dread is several more months of Pittsburgh media butchering LGBTQ issues by describing them in terms like “homosexual activists” and “gay sex” (love to see Ken Rice say that) and “transsexuals” and just an abundance of the general ignorance they show when it comes to covering equality issues or stories that happen to involve LGBTQ folks.
Again, please stop outing other Santorum staffers/volunteers in my comments section. I’m not approving them b/c they are not relevant. The point, my LGBTQ friends and allies, is what are you doing to make sure Santorum doesn’t stick around to the PA primary election?
He’s not qualified to be President. Period. His stance on a range of social issues is misinformed and dangerous. I’m far more terrified that he might impact my ability to make decisions about my healthcare than his opinion on my sexual activities, but I’m smart enough to see the slippery slope. I also really want people to have jobs. Seriously.
PS: I have a great photo of Rick and me! I just can’t find it right now. Plus, my blog is broke, but I’ll post on Facebook.
