Carrie Underwood States Her Own Faith & Marriage Underpin Her Support for Marriage Equality

This is an interesting development. Carrie Underwood has publicly stated her support for marriage equality. From an interview with a British publication, The Independent.

“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” she said. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

Underwood goes on to state that her non-denominational Christian church is gay-friendly and expresses her disgust for Christians who promote hate.

[S]he condemned “people who use the Bible for hate”, adding: “That’s not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented.”

What will this mean for country music? And, more importantly, country music fans who now “know” someone that openly affirms the intrinsic value of same sex relationships? I’m seeing a tour with Underwood, openly lesbian country singer Chele Wright and the Dixie Chicks, with surprise guest K.D. Lang?

Seriously. I would go to see that concert.

Truth be told, this is really big news. Underwood is the most famous and successful graduate of American Idol – she’s a true country “rock star” and her words will have an impact on people precisely because she’s been so open about her Christian faith. She’s one of “them” and that goes a long way to nudging people to reconsider their views.

Could she be the county Kristen Chenoweth? Will she be on GLEE next year?
