This is an exciting giveaway! The Pittsburgh Opera has teamed up with us to give away two tickets to a performance of Madama Butterfly on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 PM at the Benedum Center.
Cio-Cio San’s open heart and trusting nature are the reasons that Pinkerton should love her, and the reasons that we weep at the end of the opera.
We’re introduced to the lopsided love between a young Japanese woman and Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, a U.S. Naval officer. The young woman, nicknamed Butterfly, gives up her family and her religion to be with Pinkerton. Pinkerton gives up nothing, and promptly leaves for nearly three years. He eventually returns, with his American wife, and the young Butterfly is mortally devastated.
If you’ve never been to the opera before, this is a wonderful opportunity – it is sung in Italian, but there are English subtitles projected over the stage. You can also take advantage of Audio Commentary for this performance only. AND you can join the “Pre-Opera Talk” one hour before the performance to learn more about Puccini and the performance.
- Participants must be 18 or older (it is fine to bring a youth to the performance, but an adult must register here.) Tickets will be available at will-call with photo ID. The performance is at 7 PM on Tuesday, March 19 at the Benedum Center only. Winner will be notified Friday March 15 vie email – you must respond in 24 hours or another winner will be selected.
- Please be sure we can find your email address via your comment, twitter account or FB account (whichever you choose to use.)
- Please make sure that your comment username can be matched with your Rafflecopter name or email. You can also email us with that information. A comment is required and will be confirmed before a winner is selected.

My favorite opera is La Boheme, mostly because I have never seen an actual performance of Madame Butterfly. I saw a dress rehearsal of it once, in grad school (I had a crush on the lead violinist). I think if I got to see it, it may be bumped to number 1.

Aida, if that’s an opera. I need some culture in my life. 🙂
I need to see an opera for a college class!
