During the Sunday Pride festivities in Pittsburgh, a local woman recorded an incident involving a confrontation between anti-LGBTQ protestors and members of our community. The incident resulted in a young woman allegedly from our community being detained by the police with allegations of misconduct by the officer involved. (I use allegedly because she has not personally identified herself that way publicly.)
If you have information or witnessed this incident, please contact the City’s Office of Municipal Investigations at 412-255-2804. I’m not certain if the Citizen’s Police Review Board has opened an investigation yet, but I’ll find out. Issues of potential police misconduct against our community are very serious. Making time to share what you know, no matter how minor a detail it seems, matters.
However, the backstory here is also important.
What I’m looking for is identifying information about the anti-LGBTQ protestors. Do you have photos? Did you see any indication of their affiliation? How many were there? This took place at 6th and Liberty apparently? That’s a very important piece of this puzzle – who was protesting?
Remember, there are other upcoming events such as the Dyke and Trans March, Pride Drag Bowl, a wedding exhibit, and several other events. Let’s find out if those events might be targeted so the organizers can respond appropriately.
If you have information on the protestors, please contact me pghlesbian at gmail.
Janet Granite sent me this photo for example.
