A few months ago, my friends at Northside Common Ministries contacted me and asked me to help them with a very specific task – creating a crowdfunding drive to renovate the food pantry. I was honored to help and put together a project called #ReRampPgh – what I thought was a clever play on renovating the actual ramps in the food pantry.

The Northside Food Pantry is Pittsburgh’s largest food pantry, serving seniors, veterans and families who live in the 15212, 15214 and 15233 Zip Codes. Operated by Northside Common Ministries, it is one of the only pantries in Pittsburgh to offer a supermarket-style experience for those it serves, a more dignified approach that gives those in need a choice over what they receive.

This fundraiser is focused on a necessary renovation effort to make the pantry more accessible, safer and more efficient. The “reramp” includes replacing existing ramps, shelving, tables, storage units and more to double the number of people being served and help them return to their families or work as quickly as possible.

The goal is to raise $12,000 to cover the labor and expenses to complete the project in a one week period during August when the pantry annually closes. This will cause the least amount of disruption to clients.  During the first week, we had access to a matching pledge and were able to raise more than 50% of the goal thanks to nearly 70 different donors.
