Sober, but good news out of Baltimore – police have made an arrest in the murder of Mia Henderson. Mia was killed in July 2014, stabbed repeatedly and left in the street. She was 26.
Shawn Oliver, 44, of Hagerstown, Maryland was arrested and charged with first and second degree murder in addition to other counts.
Mia’s brother is NBA player, Reggie Bullock. Bullock continues to refer to his sibling using her old name and pronouns. You’ll come across that if you click through on some of the links.
Something that really struck me when I read this article is the fact that Mia’s struggle to survive helped to bring her killer to justice:
Interim Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said during a press conference that detectives were able to use DNA from under Henderson’s fingernails to link her to Oliver.
Mia fought for her life, to live her authentic life even if her family chose not to respect that and for her very real physical life when another human being chose not respect her. She fought and the DNA she captured helped with the arrest. Now someone who presents a potential harm to other trans women is no longer on the streets.
Shouldn’t we also fight for Mia and our trans sisters?
Rest in power, Mia. You are not forgotten.
