Arrest in the Murder of Philly Trans Woman of Color, Maya Young

Maya Young Philadelphia

Police have made at least one arrest in the murder of Maya Young, a 25 year old trans woman of color who was stabbed to death in February.  From Philly.com – NOTE that Maya is misgendered and her old name and criminal history are disclosed without any clear connection to her murder.

Tiffany E. Floyd, 24, is being held without bond on murder and conspiracy charges, according to court records.

Authorities said more arrests were “imminent,” but they did not elaborate Tuesday night.

The police has not released a motive or other information.

I’d also like to note that I have come across some references to Maya as Mya. I have reached out to community leaders in Philadelphia to be 100% sure I am using the proper spelling.

And I will remind all reader that it is incumbent on us to hold law enforcement and the media accountable to the level of professionalism required to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. Using Maya’s old name isn’t helpful. Publishing her criminal history isn’t helpful. It is clear there’s no obvious link or the reporters would have laid that out. It is just grist for inaccuracy and further injustice in an epidemic of violence that has hit too close to home in the past year.
