Kashmire Redd, 28, is 19th Trans Person Killed in 2017

Kashmire Redd

I just read this on TransGriot where Monica Roberts reports that a 28 year old black trans man, Kashmire Redd, was stabbed multiple times by his partner and succumbed to those injuries. This happened in Gates, New York, a suburb of Rochester. Kashmire is the 19th trans person killed this year.

40 year old Doris Carrasquillo has been charged with second degree murder in this case. There have been previous calls to their shared residence on reports of domestic disputes, but police have no released information on what happened in this case.  According to local sources, Redd and Carrasquillo had been together for several months.

Domestic or interpersonal violence is a pernicious threat within the trans and the LGBTQ community as a whole. This is one reason we count on law enforcement, health care providers and others in a position to screen and respond to IPV be fully competent in responding to queer relationships. Sadly, that day is not yet here.

Kashmire was 28 years old. According to his Facebok page, he had friends and family whom he loved, people who will grieve his death. He died in his own home, his sanctuary, his space. No one deserves that. If you or someone that you love is experiencing abuse at the hands of a partner, spouse or family member, please reach out for support. In Pittsburgh, one such place is Persad Center. Others are listed below.

Rest in power, Kashmire. Your bright grin will be missed. You deserved to live a long, full life with people who value and respect you. I hope that you find peace and know that we here continue to work for justice and safety for all of our trans siblings. We continue to be vigilant and work with leaders in the trans community to resist this transphobic violence.

Resources in Western Pennsylvania that can use your donation to support black trans women and/or offer supports & services to those who need them. This list is not comprehensive. TransPride Pittsburgh is an umbrella group and the best lead for referrals to other organizations. If you are in another region, use Google to find local trans resources.
