We are in our 14th year of blogging and it has been an amazing year indeed, for good and for not so good sometimes.
Being named the OUTstanding LGBTQ Blog in the nation by GLAAD during their 30th annual media awards was pretty damn exciting. It was also one of those moments where you are feeling seen, feeling that people find value in the work you do. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a national blogging award for the LGBTQ community when I kicked off this site in December 2005.
Being voted Best Local Blog in the 2019 ‘Best of Pittsburgh’ Readers Poll is another humbling and exciting milestone. The award originated in 2016 as Best Local Blogger and I won that year as well. Having my work as an individual blogger AND the site itself recognized twice by my Pittsburgh neighbors is heady stuff, my dear readers.
I hope it means lots of new eyes on the #AMPLIFY archive of LGBTQ stories (more than 300) from Western Pennsylvania, an archive we’ve been curating since 2015. Our archive is filled with coming out stories, in-depth explorations of family acceptance (& rejection), and lots and lots of resources and ideas and imagination from a very hopeful group of hundreds of people who have contributed to the archive.
I hope it means more people reading my column at Pittsburgh Current, the first LGBTQ editorial/opinion column at a mainstream media outlet in Western Pennsylvania. And please check out my newest adventure as curator of the ‘Seven with Sue’ Q&A series at Burgh Vivant.
I hope it means more readers of our #PghCatLadies posts, especially the profiles of cats up for adoption through Pittsburgh C.A.T.
I hope it means that visibility and representation of fat, queer, disabled women with opinions is on the increase along other voices often marginalized in conversations. More blogs, please! And be sure to check out our #FlipTheScript series where I am the one answering Q&A’s created by some wonderful local folks, friends, and neighbors.
I hope you follow us on Twitter @Pghlesbian24
I hope you like our blog Facebook page facebook.com/pghlesbian
I hope you come check out our cat photos on Instagram @Pghlesbian
I hope you consider supporting our projects via special fundraisers like the video Q&A with Ed Pinto and our #CatFoodDrivePgh and our personal cat lady rescue efforts.
We’ve got some exciting new projects ready to roll out in the next few months.
Finally, let me thank people whose investment has made this all possible – Trish, Ledcat, Sarah, and our many contributing bloggers. Anna and John and Geoff for keeping the mechanics running. Nina Gibbs and Jason Sauer for helping reimagine all the artistic blogging possibilities. There are many, many more people who make all of this possible.
I want to give a special thanks to my friends Pam, Joyce, Sarah, and Sarah. And to our niblings who make everything both necessary and possible – Ava, Josiah, Ethan, Jack, Jessilyn, and Elijah. I love all of you.
Thank you!
Congrats to all of the winners – a lot of friends and a lot of queer folks among them. Check out the complete list.
