A Latina transgender woman in her early 20’s was shot to death on December 26 in the Bronx borough of New York City. She was shot in the back of her head and died at the scene according to officers responding to the 911 call.
Her name was Alexandria Winchester. The Ali Forney Center in New York announced her death and confirmed she was a participant in their programming. There are few details about Alexandria’s life as of yet. Some reports say she was 20, others 24. The mainstream media coverage misgenders her and is also vague about her age.
Alexandria’s life mattered. Obviously, the Ali Forney Center has more details on her than they can publicly share and we have to trust their lead. They are planning a memorial. It feels wrong to not have a photo or some simple details on her life. We just know a few bits of her identity and that her life was stolen by a seemingly execution style violence.
Alexandria is the 44th trans or gender nonconforming person known to be killed in 2020 in the United States. That’s a horrifyingly high record. She’s the 10th Latinx neighbor to be killed. And she is one of 19 victims 25 or younger. She’s the 3rd reported death from New York City and the 2nd from the Bronx specifically.
I am especially saddened to realize that we lost young trans women on Dec 25, 26, and 27. This is supposed to be one of the times of the year where we celebrate the birth of a savior and yet, we have this turn of events. I expect most Christian identified people will simply turn the other cheek. That’s heartbreaking, for these young women and for all of those who are still with us.
Alexandria’s life mattered. It is important that we collectively honor her truth and acknowledge her death. I invite you to join me in making a modest donation to the Ali Forney Center in Alexandria’s name so that other young people can have their flowers while they are still with us.
Rest in power, Alexandria. You deserved so much more time to embrace your life and enjoy your truth. You will not be forgotten. Your friends and loved ones will strive to create a better world that celebrates you.
May your memory be a revolution.
