Her name was Kiér Laprí Kartier also known as Kier Laprice Soloman. She was 21 years old and lived in Dallas. On Thursday, September 30, she became the most recent Black trans women to lose her life in the campaign of terror targeting the trans community.

She was found near Dallas dead in a car with fatal gunshot wounds. From the Star-Telegram:

Police responded to a call at the complex shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1100 block of Stonetrail Circle in Arlington.

A resident reported finding an unresponsive person in a car that was parked at the complex.

When they arrived, police found the victim with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead.

Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood seeking witnesses and surveillance video, and speaking to friends and family of the victim.

Kiér Lapri was from Dallas. She attended Skyine High School. Her social media feed is full of sharp humor and commentary about her day to day life. Her mother, aunt, and cousin among many, many friends are pouring their grief onto social media, both to honor her life and to – unfortunately – correct the media who are misgendering her.

Kiér Lapri is the thirty-eighth trans, nonbinary or gender nonconforming person reported killed in 2021. Thirty-five of these neighbors have been BIPOC. She is the 29th victim who identified as Black. In total, there have been thirty-eight murders or suspicious deaths in the first 260 days of 2021, an average of one death every 7.3 days. 25 of these victims were under the age of 30. That we know of, as many deaths go unreported or unacknowledged.

2021 is on track to exceed 2020’s record of 44 deaths. This number is potentially skewed due to underreporting in previous years. It is a horrifying reality, but one we can’t afford to ignore.

76% of the victims in 2021 have been Black. 66% have been under the age of 30.

Rest in power, Kiér Lapri. You deserved so many more minutes and months and years to enjoy your life. We failed you and it is important for us to honor your life and grieve your death. Your loved ones are saying your name and celebrating their love for you – an example for us all.

May your memory be a revolution.
