Celebrate National Coming Out Day By Reading These 318 Stories

On this National Coming Out Day, it is important to remember that coming out is not a one and done experience – we “come out” every time we meet someone new who has been taught to assume everyone is heterosexual and cisgender. And sometimes we don’t come out because it is not safe. We might come out in phases or waves. As we learn more about sexual orientations and gender identities, our understanding of our own identity expands and grows.

My Coming Out Story

Recently, I shared my coming out story with a friend who asked me if I had ever considered myself bisexual because I had relationships with men. I explained that the language I had at the time was gay and lesbian. I didn’t have any nuance to understand myself. It was ignorance, not denial. How I understand myself now 25 years later is much more informed and subtle, in part due to my interactions with other LGBTQ+ folx. I identify as queer, but move comfortably between lesbian and gay as well. Am I bisexual? That’s not the question. Asking me how I identify, not if I identify as any certain way is appropriate. It is an open-ended question that requires us to be curious about ourselves and other people.

To commemorate National Coming Out Day, I’m revisiting our #AMPLIFY archive this year to highlight the importance of preserving this blog. Below you’ll find 318 unique coming out stories from folx with ties to Western Pennsylvania.

Please describe your coming out experience. Where did you find support? What challenges did you face?

How would you describe yourself NOW in terms of “being out”?
