The Crime

Lisa Love was a 35 year old Black trans woman living in Chicago. This week, she became the most recent victim of anti-trans violence.

According to police, around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the 35-year-old was shot in the chest and back near 79th St. and Cottage Grove Ave. Loved ones said Turman was walking home after leaving a friend’s house.

“A car just drove up, made a U-turn and (saw) my cousin,” Donna said. “Approximately 30 seconds later, the car stopped and my cousin was shot.”

No suspects have been identified.

Honoring Lisa

Lisa was born in Chicago, moved to Rockford, Illinois in her twenties, and returned to Chicago. She attended Kenwood Academy High School. She was a fan of actor Amiyah Scott and musician Contradiction Tha Kid along with television shows. Lisa also liked several news stations and was a fan of movies.

Lisa’s family are grieving her senseless death, struggling to understand how simply walking home can lead to such tragedy. The intensity of the shooting is also horrifying.

“An all-around good person who did not deserve this,” said Donna, a cousin of Turman, during a phone interview with WGN News. “A loving, caring, free-spirited person. Always smiling and laughing.”

We recognize Lisa as the 33rd trans or gender nonconforming person whose violent death has been reported in 2023. She is the 25th trans person of color and the 17th Black trans person.  Lisa is the 15th Black trans woman. A trans person has been killed in the US every 8.7 days in 2023. “Reported” is an important distinction to make as we know there are more folx whose deaths remain unacknowledged. Indeed we have included two unidentified people whose remains were discovered this year on our list.

Earlier this same week, we reported on the murder of another Black trans person in Chicago. In total, three trans folx have been killed in Chicago in 2023. My list includes one additional person whose post will be shared later today.

Rest in power, Lisa. Everyone should be free to simply walk home. It is a true tragedy that your life was taken so violently. You deserved to live a long life, enjoy the fruits of your hard work, and feel safe. The shame is on us for failing to create a safe world for you. Thank you for all that you brought to us.
