Yesterday, we restocked the Dr. John P. Ruffing VMD Pet Food Pantry with recent donations and strategized on the January distribution. We continue to believe that inflation is impacting our pantry households and potential donors.
We’ve added ten households – six members of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh who are on strike from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and four members of the community.
Donations have not been robust, but we are ready for January.
Our approach is to divide food equally among the enrolled households whether they have 1 pet or a colony of 50+ cats. Right now, we’ve been providing a distribution of about 12 pounds of dry food and 20 cans of wet food.
12 lbs of dry food averages $20-25 right now. 20 cans of wet food averages $18-22. So a single distribution works out to $38-47 this month. Plus, we have treats and we use some supplies.
That rounds up to about $50 per household. We have 37 active households and 60 total households registered.
Donations of dog and cat good, both dry and canned are welcome. The project has a wishlist at bit.ly/TheRuffList
