This blog and the work we do is supported by my SSDI check, a few ads, and mostly – you. You subscribe, you share, and you invest.
A week ago was my SSDI check date – they divide us by birthrates into the first, second, third, etc week of the month. While watching Rachel Maddow on that Tuesday evening, I freaked myself out. She was reporting on the current issues – checks not being deposited, unauthorized withdrawals for checks from previous months, the horrible delays people are experiencing with customer service, and so forth. No flowers.
I let my fear get the best of me and panicked that my check would not be deposited and OMG what would I do. When Trump and Musk talk about fraud in Social Security, sure they mean deceased people continuing to receive checks. Frankly, that’s hard to pull off because any funeral home must report the death. Much like SNAP fraud, it is not a significant issue. It is a convenient one to scapegoat folx.
Then there are folx like me who are on disability, not retirement income. We are ‘totally and permanently’ disabled. And we are treated like sneaky swindlers and con artists from day one – the application process is a nightmare, the ongoing reviews are also challenging,, and so forth. It seems to me that people on SSDI are more likely to be labeled as scammers working the system and causing all the fraud with our fake disabilities. Especially those of us with hidden disabilities like mental illness.
So that Tuesday, I panicked and sat up past midnight waiting for the deposit. I finally fell asleep thinking that I couldn’t do anything about it in the middle of the night. I dream of rain and flowers.
When I awoke, it was there in my account. Big sigh of relief. And the realization that I can’t put myself through this every month.
And neither should all of the other people relying on a Social Security program.
My best form of resistance is this blog and my social media most of which are growing quite a bit *yay.
So I need you and you need me. For SSDI, marriage equality, disability rights, and even cats.
