LGBTQ News: School Districts Suing the State, Trans Day of Visibility, and Update on Legislation

In early March, we reported that two public school districts and several parents have sued Pennsylvania. The plaintiffs include two districts — South Side Area and Knoch, both in western Pennsylvania — and two Republican state lawmakers, Reps. Aaron Bernstine (Lawrence and Butler County) and Barbara Gleim (Cumberland County) as well as three parents and seven students.

Now 90.5 WESA FM is reporting that a third Butler County legislator has involved herself in the case. State Rep. Stephenie Scialabba, whose law firm serves as the solicitor for the districts that filed the suit.  Scialabba’s law firm web page says her specialty is in data privacy and cybersecurity, rather than municipal, discrimination, or education law.

But to sue the state government you are part of as part of your second job, State Rep Emily Kinkead said, smacks of “trying to get around the legislative process and effect policy change in different ways.”

The Pennsylvania Senate has voted out of committee legislation than targets trans girl athletes. Senate Bill 9 may now proceed to the full Senate. We are fortunate that the PA House has a one vote majority and the Governor opposes this legalized harassment of kids. We are not fortunate that so many Senators jumped on this bandwagon while turning a blind eye to things that parity in school spending on sports that would create more opportunities for all girls and female athletes.
