The Dr. John P. Ruffing VMD Pet Food Projects pet food pantry has been operating for six months. We have 40 active caretakers/households registered and 60 total. We typically give 11-15 pounds of dry and 20 cans of wet each month.
We’ve also been working to get people connected with each other, especially neighbors. We’ve coordinated ride sharing to reduce trips to pick up items, sharing pet supplies, and mutual support. There’s a lot of wisdom in our folx and they are willing to share.
We are working on permanent funding sources, but right now – things are tight.
If anyone is able to contribute items, there are multiple requests. We have an Amazon wish list and a Chewy wish list. Any quantity is welcome – we can divide the nonfood items easily.
We fortunately have an actual pantry and some extra rooms with shelving at Marie’s house. The pantry that was built into the house is huge and a good fit for bags of pet food.
Here’s what’s been requested
- Paper plates and bowls
- Paper towels
- Dry dog food
- Dry cat food
- Wipes both bleach and baby
- Trash bags
- Scrub type sponges
- Litter, both traditional and pellet
- Food for rabbits and guinea pigs
Of course we can use the general stuff – canned food, treats, beds, towels, etc but I realize most of those items go to rescues.

Folx are already stretched, anxiety and uncertainty about the impact of tariffs on pet items makes it so worse as does the potetial impact on veterinary resources.
We are based on the Northside and primarily focus on those neighborhoods and adjacent communities. But we wouldn’t turn others in Allegheny County away if we have inventory. Still our focus is on colony caretakers.
Items can be dropped off at
1213 W. North Avenue Pitttsburgb 15233 (steps to the bins)
1440 Faulsey Way 15233 (a backyard address so there’s no house)
Look for the yellow #PghCatFolx yard signs and patio bins
Thank you!
