Earlier this year, I was part of a team that helped to raise more than $12,000 to renovate the food pantry at Northside Common Ministries. It was an honor to help. And I’m humbled to be receiving a special recognition at their upcoming annual dinner.
Northside Common Ministries is proud to award a special honors award at our upcoming Celebration of Caring Dinner which celebrates individual’s who through volunteerism make a difference in the lives of the areas hungry and homeless to Sue Kerr in recognition of her service to the Northside Community Food Pantry. Sue helped coordinate the Food Pantries recent crowdfunding campaign which raised over $12,000 to be used to renovate the space and fill the shelves. Help us celebrate Sue. If you would like to join in the celebration information about purchasing tickets for the dinner can be found on our web site www.ncmin.org
I’m currently asking my friends to donate new and gently used tote bags for this food pantry, hoping to collect 450 bags for my 45th birthday later this month.
I don’t want to wax eloquent about this honor because the real honor is achieving our goal and watching the pantry renovations take place. But I will share an anecdote from an encounter I had a few years ago with a gentleman who was temporarily living at NCM. He had volunteered to help me unload a donation of “swag” items donated to the pantry – cups, pens, notepads, bags, even frisbees. As we toted out the final load, he asked very quietly if he could have one of the travel mugs and a binder with a pen. He had a job interview the next day and told me that he would feel more confident with these items, like a typical person applying for a job might carry.
What would you do in that moment?
The ways in which we can offer our neighbors dignity are many. Northside Common Ministries is just one of the wonderful resources available to us to support with donations of money and items.
We’d love to see you at the dinner on October 23 – the day after my 45th birthday!
