On Being Sick

Yesterday, I felt fine. I did a bit of volunteer work, ate pancakes and enjoyed Rock of Ages. When I went to bed, I felt some discomfort in my back but I assumed it was a muscle or something.

I woke up in pain. Not muscle pain, something inside pain. So off to MedExpress. That was a great idea. It cost $20 and I was examined in minutes.

I learned I have a kidney infection. So I am in bed, on meds and consuming as much liquid as possible. Fun times. I have 24 hours to see if I need to go to the ER. Keep your fingers crossed.

I am not a good patient. I am in the zone of not feeling well enough to get out my laptop or read, but bored and restless. I try to do too much on my own b/c I am bored and feel guilty. But I literally cannot crouch or bend w/o searing pain.

So I’m left to play words with friends and surf kidney websites on my phone. Note: surfing medical terms beyond webmd is not constructive.

I am also grateful. I have good health insurance and live fairly close to MedExpress. I have the money for the copays and to buy juice, etc. My house is comfortable, I don’t have to worry about missing work and I have someone to take care of the chores I can’t do. If my condition worsens, I have a PCP to call. I live a mile from a good ER.  I am quite fortunate.

I feel like someone kicked my kidney while wearing doc martens, but I am mostly feeling grateful.
