Devastating news from New Orleans this Mardi Gras weekend as we learn about the murder of Chyna Gibson, known in the ballroom community as Chyna Doll Dupree. From TransGriot
New Orleans Police responded to a call Saturday night around 8:26 PM CST in the 4300 block of Downman Road and found the body of Gibson lying in the parking lot of the Bella Plaza shopping center in New Orleans East between two vehicles in front of a clothing store.
And as usual, at least one NOLA news station, WWL-TV misgendered her.
She had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene. Gibson is now the fifth US trans woman murdered in 2017, all women of color.
Note that several of the media outlets have updated their news coverage which is a testament to the swift response by trans advocates who must add this onerous task to their grieving process.
Chyna had returned to New Orleans from her California home to celebrate Mardi Gras with her family and friends.
Anyone with information about Chyna’s murder should contact New Orleans Police Department at 504- 658-1111. You can also reach out via Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or 1-877-903-STOP if you have information that will lead to the apprehension of the person or persons who committed this crime.
Friends in Houston have organized a memorial event on Sunday, February 26. Other events are being planned.
Rest in power, Chyna. Your magic brightened this world and your extended family across the nation are seeking justice for your legacy.
