Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson is the 24th Trans Person Murdered in 2017

Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson.

Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson was found dead in a motel room in Oklahoma City on Monday, November 27, 2017. She was 31 years old. She is now the 24th transgender person known to be murdered in the United States during 2017. Her death comes just a week after the Transgender Day of Remembrance honored victims of anti-trans violence.

Police responded to a call of a disturbance at the hotel, discovering Brooklyn’s body. Sadly, the original and local reporting misgenders and deadnames Brooklyn.

According to media reports, Brooklyn was in the midst of legally changing her name. Her family issued a statement to the media:

Brooklyn Stevenson’s family released a statement to the TV station, saying, “We are heartbroken. Brooklyn BreYanna was an amazing daughter, sister and friend with a giving and loving heart. We pray that those who committed this heinous crime will be identified and Brooklyn will receive justice.” The family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help with burial costs.

Brooklyn’s mother, Veronica, posted on the GoFundMe page:

I can tell from the outpouring of love that I have been receiving via Facebook, Instant Messenger, phone calls and texts that Brooklyn was loved by many and will truly be missed by all of you.

If you have information that can help police, call the Homicide Tip Line at 405-297-1200.

Rest in power, Brooklyn BreYanna. Your life touched many and your death is grieved by friends, family, and neighbors across the world.

The list of trans people killed in 2017 thus far. Note that people have different numbers based on different factors. The most important thing that unites us all is that we want the violence to stop. We need to keep asking ‘Where is the outrage?’
