This looks like a terrific event debuting this week with folkLAB
folkLAB produces series of performance art pieces which hope to create an artistic community network dedicated to fair representation, compensation and access in the performing arts. folkLAB’s current series “in Our Voice” and “miniMythologies” foster the creation of brand new performance work that aims to create a new, decolonized American folklore and mythology through performance in the voices of the oppressed.
“Mija: one bitch’s tale” created by Nicole Gallagher, will premiere July 31st-August 4th 2019 at Beauty Shoppe’s Terminal Building Makerbay in Pittsburgh’s South Side. The show is an interdisciplinary, autobiographical one woman show by miniMythologies resident artist Nicole Gallagher (co-founder of Fair Moans). Nicole is a queer, bi-racial Latina with a diverse skill set and history. These shows are created in 3-4 week intensive immersive experiences.
You can read my Q&A with Nicole Gallagher via ‘Burgh Vivant.
Tickets for the performance are available here. General admission is $20 with ‘pay what you can’ option available on Sunday August 4 for the matinee.
One thing I like about this is how robust the PR materials are for the performance. The website specifically addresses accessibility, ‘pay what you can’ options, and the duration of the performance as well as the appropriate ages. It helps attendees make an informed decision around key issues that are too often barriers to accessing arts and culture events in this City.
- The show will run approximately 1 hour with no intermission.
- There will be one “pay-what-you-can” performance on Sunday, August 4th @1pm
- The building is ADA accessible.
- There is a free on-site parking lot.
- Ages +14 (with a parent or guardian)
