Ahem. This is offensive and ignorant on so many levels. It isn’t just a distasteful opinion, it is sheer distortion of factual information on the causes of hunger, the rates of hunger, the role of food stamps and the economy. How could you elect a President who doesn’t understand the association of poverty, employment and hunger? Where are his priorities – with the working people making $9/hour?

Speaking on Monday in Iowa.

Rick Santorum stated:

“Is there a hunger problem if the poorest people in America are the most obese?” he said, responding to a Monitor editor’s question about a recent New York Times report that said one in three Americans are poor or near poor.

Santorum said he would cut and cap spending on the food stamp program and put the money in block grants for states to individually administer.

Then there is this report on his comments:

Santorum told the group he would cut the food stamp program, describing it as one of the fastest growing programs in Washington, D.C.

Forty-eight million people are on food stamps in a country with 300-million people, said Santorum.

“If hunger is a problem in America, then why do we have an obesity problem among the people who we say have a hunger program?” Santorum asked.

This is pretty strange. Santorum represented the Mon Valley, still struggling to recover from the demise of the steel industry so he had plenty of exposure to impact of job loss on hunger relief programs. He’s also been a proponent of housing relief for working families.

Just more ridiculous ignorance being fed to people who are part of “them” not “us” … one paycheck themselves away from a food pantry. How very sad.
