Watch Five Nominees in ‘Outstanding Blog’ Category Chat with Peppermint Leading Up to #GLAADawards

GLAAD Media Awards Blog Conversation

I love blogging. I also love talking about blogging, reminding people of the power of queer and trans blogs in particular. So when the finalists for the Outstanding Blog category were announced, I saw a perfect opportunity to record a dialogue amongst us to lean into the energy of the ‘blogosphere.’ The blogosphere was a time when blogs were more responsive and engaged directly with each other, before social media took on that role. Now we tend to be in silos a bit more with our original content. Blogs are more tools like youtube channels, twitter streams, and mailchimp email to share messaging from a corporate or collective perspective. What’s lost has been the grassroots nature and the interactive component between blogs.

You can count on queer content creators to lean into that void to weave connections between these realities.

But GLAAD gave us an opportunity lean into all of that. I had originally thought of a general Zoom recording. GLAAD took it to another level. They recruited a moderator from their board, Peppermint, who is also hosting the awards on Friday and a Pennsylvania native. GLAAD handled all of the video recording and editing. They created a promotional campaign tied into the GLAADawards. It has been a heady investment in our shared work and a lovely experience for blogs to front and center amidst so many much more visible categories and creators.

I love this conversation! We covered a lot of ground in 60 minutes and I hope that will continue. Be sure to check out all of the blogs and then tune in Friday night for the #GLAADawards. This year is particularly exciting because four of us nominated blogs have each won before. Only one site has ever won twice – TransGriot helmed by Monica Roberts who tragically did not live to receive her second award in 2021. Will there be another repeat winner this year? Or will a new, but important voice in this conversation at The Reckoning blog make history by winning the first year they are nominated? Any of these outcomes is great, especially building on the conversation we had last month that you can watch in the video below.

Good luck to all of the nominees. Thank you for creating.
