‘Can You Drive a Stick?’ Or How I Ended Up With a Classic Land Rover Defender

November is an intense month. Sad anniversaries of dead loved ones. My mother’s birthday (today,)  The fun of Thanksgiving meals. Occasional snow flurries. Lingering leaves hanging tightly to their trees.

The Season of the Sticks?

So why not set a personal challenge -again- to blog daily? November is National Writers Month, the closest we’ll get to a national blogging holiday.

November has historically been NaBloPoMo or National Blog Post Month during which participants post daily, sometimes using prompts and sometimes not. It has morphed over the years, but it is back. I’m in. Let’s go.

Speaking of going, a friend lent me some wheels when he learned I did not have access to a car. The vehicle has this amazing backstory.

This is a 1991 Land Rover Defender. It was part of Rally Solidario, a rally of off reading enthusiasts held in Morocco to distribute humanitarian supplies.

I’m not sure which year this vehicle participated. Afterwards, it landed in England and then Florida. My friend bought it there and transported it to Pittsburgh in 2022.

I learned to drive on a stick. My first beater car was a 4-speed. My first new car was a 5-speed. It has been a while, but I can drive a stick.

So my other every day challenge will be to drive the Sally Spectra each day to flex my muscles. Sally Spectra is a working name.

Two challenges. One month. Thanksgiving dinner to wrap it all up.

Final note – yes, the Land Rover is already filled with donations of cat food. Yep.
