S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT! What’s your favorite way to spend Saturday night?
Short answer – with Ledcat.
We have a flexible agreement that Saturday night is “date night” – we might spend the day in angst or mandatory activity, but barring illness or unavoidable commitment – we try to do something fun on Saturday nights. But having a built-in date doesn’t always make date night run smoothly.
Since I write the feature known as LGBTQ Things To Do in Pittsburgh, I’m usually aware of events in the queer community that might interest both of us.
This weekend, it is the Ladies Spring Fling – a LBTQ women’s dance held at a lodge in South Park with a DJ and potluck and more. This is part of the twice yearly “Out 2 Dance” events organized by a group of local women to support the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Pittsburgh. The event is $10 each plus the costs associated with our potluck contribution. So for about $26, we’ll have a night with friends, dinner and the rare opportunity to dance with one another. If you read this after the Spring Fling, keep your eyes open for the Fall Fling in November.
Some weekends, there are simply too many choices and that’s a very good thing. And the great thing about Pittsburgh is that there are very often affordable or free events taking place. The not so great thing about Pittsburgh is that many, many event planners don’t take into consideration things like public transportation, child care, or accessibility.
But I definitely think the overall “Things To Do” for LGBTQ folks has improved dramatically over the years. Here are some recent Saturday night examples:
- Sean Dorsey’s “History of Dance” at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty
- T to T Gathering at the GLCC, sponsored by TransPride Pittsburgh
- OUTrageous Bingo
- LUPEC Women’s History Happy Hour
- Plays like “A Feminine Ending” at Off The Wall and others including City Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater, PICT and so many others
- Dance parties (monthly) hosted by iCandy and Impulse Pittsburgh (sometimes jointly)
- Cabaret show by Renaissance City Choirs
- Concerts and performances by Dicey & Paprika and other queer friendly artists at smaller venues around the City
- Game Night at the GLCC (monthly)
- Movies sponsored by the Queer Video Vault
- Fundraisers, galas, arts shows and other events organized by LGBTQ organizations including Project Silk, Dreams of Hope, GLSEN Pittsburgh and more
- We have a thriving drag scene and there are performances almost every night of the week including Saturdays
That’s just a sampling. When you factor in the LGBTQ friendly events, the many affordable restaurants and the arrival of spring weather – there’s definitely lots more to do that’s LGBTQ! How many times can I insert that rhyme scheme into this post? LOL
—> Please keep in mind that some neighbors lack some of the Saturday night “prep” items we might take for granted such as shampoo, deodorant, even soap. Your modest donation to fund Cathy’s Closet, a personal care closet at the GLCC for the LGBTQ community will help us open the doors by June.
You can list your event on LGBTQ Things To Do by sending all of the details to the GLCC for inclusion on the Community Calendar – just send details exactly as you want them published to info@glccpgh.org Cindy is the volunteer who manages that email account; she’ll get your event listed and then it will be included in GLCC promotional efforts from there.
