Sue is the founder of Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents blog, established in 2005.. She has an MSW from the University in Pittsburgh and a BA in Political Science from Marymount University. Born and raised in West Mifflin, Sue attended college in Washington DC, then graduate school in Louisiana and ended up in Kentucky doing social service ministry. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1997. She now lives on Pittsburgh’s Northside with her wife, Laura. In 2015, she launched the #AMPLIFY LGBTQ archive in conjunction with a two-year artist in residence stint with Most Wanted Fine Art. Sue and her wife have fostered over 25 kittens through Pittsburgh CAT and Homeless Cat Management Team, and now manage multiple community cat colonies in their neighborhood. In 2020, Sue cofounded the Pittsburgh MasQUe ProjecT to support the queer and trans community during the pandemic, distributing tens of thousands of face masks and other supplies throughout the region. In 2021, Sue created the #PghCatFolx projects to support neighbors working with community cats. Under that heading came the Dr. John P. Ruffing DVM Pet Food Projects, memorializing one of her very best friends who died in 2007. In 2021, Sue worked with community leaders to develop and establish a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities (PLC) where she currently serves as Board President. She uses both her undergraduate and graduate degrees on a regular basis as a blogger and activist and regularly circulates her 1991 internship photo just to shake things up on her social media feeds. Her own experiences with cPTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other health challenges have fueled her health blogging and activism. She also writes extensively about her family history, drawing on her amateur genealogy hobby. The blog regularly reviews arts and cultural events as well as exploring restaurants, soap opera storylines, and hyper-local news. Sue and her wife Laura have been together since 2003. They were married on a very cold February 2, 2021 in their backyard at a very small ceremony co-officiated by their pagan priestess friend, Anne, and then-Mayor Bill Peduto. They have six niblings, four in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia.

The Aunts Come Bearing Mr. Bacon and Monsieur Tofu

Pittsburgh Lesbian

After a long day at work or school, what are your favorite ways to wind down and decompress? This photo is from July 2012.   This is my nephew EM (his parents prefer not to use his name online) who was about 9 months in this photo I think. He and I hung out in […]

The Man Always Wins

Pittsburgh Lesbian

Tell us about a time when you fought authority and took a stand against “the man.” Did you win? I usually do not win. And this is why I blog more about soap operas and less about local politics. I stood up to Dan Onorato for misleading people about his LGBTQ voting record and not […]

Pittsburgh friends

Do you find it easy to make new friends? Tell us how you’ve mastered the art of befriending a new person. The fastest way in the world to shed yourself of a friend is to tell them the truth – the truth about your diagnosis, the truth about your needs and expectations, the truth about […]

If You Can’t Afford Tampons, What Do You Do?

Cathy's Closet Sister Supplies

This is a problem that I never thought about until I was 25 years old. While my family had financial struggles, I never lacked the items most women take for granted – pads and tampons. At 25, I met Shirley who gently educated me on the impact of poverty on our womanly ways. I learned […]

Bring me some GLEE

If you’re feeling blah, what is the one thing you do that you can count on to put a smile on your face? Interesting timing, question maker in the sky. I’m feeling blah. My poor elderly kitty isn’t doing so well. I don’t think I’m a very good crowdfundraiser at all. And I can’t seem […]

“Green” Things To Know During Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning Pittsburgh

I was browsing through the latest post from long-lost-cousin Jolie Kerr’s feature “Ask a Clean Person” on Jezebel when I realized that April is the month she’s designated to deep clean the bathroom. That reminds me of some very important Earth Day type reminders for all you cleaning freaks out there. First, do not dispose […]

Bye Bye Polar Vortex

Pittsburgh Summer

Theoretically, summer will return to the polar-vortex-battered Northern Hemisphere. What are you looking forward to doing this summer? I am looking forward to going swimming in the Pittsburgh CitiPools. By swimming I mean, moving around in the water with Ledcat as we discuss world issues. I like to tread water for exercise, but we don’t […]

Please Don’t Call Me A Writer

Pittsburgh Lesbian

I was not a kid who kept a journal or scribbled or longed to be a reporter. I was not a particularly strong writer until I started the graduate program in political philosophy at LSU where I was required to write – constantly. I was also required to read some pretty amazing writing. Somehow that […]
