Born and raised in West Mifflin, Sue attended college in Washington DC, then graduate school in Louisiana and ended up in Kentucky doing social service ministry. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1997. She now lives on Pittsburgh’s Northside with her wife, Laura. Sue and her wife have fostered over 25 kittens through Pittsburgh CAT and Homeless Cat Management Team, and now manage multiple community cat colonies in their neighborhood. In 2020, Sue cofounded the Pittsburgh MasQUe ProjecT to support the queer and trans community during the pandemic, distributing tens of thousands of face masks and other supplies throughout the region. In 2021, Sue created the #PghCatFolx projects to support neighbors working with community cats. Under that heading came the Dr. John P. Ruffing DVM Pet Food Projects, memorializing one of her very best friends who died in 2007. In 2021, Sue worked with community leaders to develop and establish a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Pittsburgh LGBTQ Charities (PLC) where she currently serves as Board President. Her own experiences with cPTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other health challenges have fueled her health blogging and activism. She also writes extensively about her family history, drawing on her amateur genealogy hobby. The blog regularly reviews arts and cultural events as well as exploring restaurants, soap opera storylines, and hyper-local news. Sue and her wife Laura have been together since 2003. They were married on a very cold February 2, 2021 in their backyard at a very small ceremony co-officiated by their pagan priestess friend, Anne, and then-Mayor Bill Peduto. They have six niblings, four in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia.

Send Christmas cookies to help your favorite rapidly but unexplained shrinking blogger

I’d like some Christmas cookies, please. One thing about unexplained weight loss is the sense of disappearing, being less tangible, of existing less fully than I did a year ago. I’m still here, but there’s less of me. But only physically. The things that make me a person are still here. Right? I desperately want […]

Holiday Pops are Beloved Pittsburgh Seasonal Institution

Every year, my wife and our friend Sarah look forward to the Holiday Pops performances at Heinz Hall. They just love it so much. I can’t wait until times are better and I can return to see Heinz Hall decorated for the holidays. There are four remaining holiday pops performances this weekend with tickets starting […]

Dear Tig and Hannah. Please do a Q&A with this lesbian blog in Pittsburgh. Sincerely, Me.

Dear Tig and Hannah, Hello from Pittsburgh. I hope you both are well. It might seem odd to write a letter to two different people who while connected by their professions and identities do happen to live on entirely separate continents. It is unlikely to think that Tig is going to read this and hit […]

Political LGBTQ&A with Xander Orenstein, Magisterial Judge Elect

We also must remember that your identity is part of your power, but do not let it alone define who you are. There are always bits of who you are that are out there to be discovered and what you will find will surprise and empower you. A few days after Election Day 2021, the […]

Saturday Morning, I’ll Be in a Fake Holiday Parade Courtesy of YaJagoff and Duquesne Light

My adult dream was to be “Pittsburgh famous” enough to be invited to participate in the now-defunct Celebrate the Seasons Parade. I marched in it many times in high school, but I wanted to ride in a fancy car and wave to the crowds. And be warm.   Alas, that parade is no more. So […]

The One Year Anniversary of the Establishment of Ft. Faulsey Cat Colony

One year for Christmas, my brother received a fort and I received a Barbie townhouse. We had a lot more fun with the fort – my father had us lay out the armies for the attack. I usually included my barbies, stuffed animals, and assorted small toys. Setting up the actual plastic soldiers was dull. […]

I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes

Asus vivibook

Nothing worse than feeling like a fool. I’ve saved up all year to be able to buy a laptop. A new laptop, not just a new-to-me laptop. When you live on Social Security disability benefits, this is not an easy feat. But I knew that as much as truly love my little Chromebook, it wasn’t […]

We’ve Fostered 24 Kittens Since 2018

Dear friends, I hope you are having a safe and healthy holiday season. Laura and I are well. We did not expect to spend nearly our entire first year as a married couple in a pandemic, but we are both triple vaccinated, practicing social distancing, and wearing our masks. Our cats have been a source […]

Allegheny Health Network Esophageal Institute Mistakes are Hard to Swallow

Allegheny Health Network

This is somewhat jumbled in my brain, but I’m going to try to write it down. I went for an endoscopy this AM at Allegheny Health Network, the goal was to affix a Bravo chip to my esophagus to monitor ph levels for a few days. I woke up in agony. In addition to the […]
