LGBTQ&A: Mayoral Candidate Bill Peduto, Longtime Ally

An occasional series where we pose some questions to local LGBTQ (and Allies) to learn more about their personal experiences with LGBTQ culture. Bill Peduto, current City Councilor in District 8 and candidate for Mayor, has a long history as a staunch ally for the LGBTQ community. Bill was a founding member of Steel City […]

“I am certain one theme in the Monday night event will be that whatever the SCOTUS does will be only a point on the arc of justice and definitely not the end point.” Tonight, an Interfaith prayer service will take place at the First United Methodist Church, 7 PM. The Week in LGBTQA – March 17, 2013

St. Patrick’s Day edition. First, let me wish my younger brother Jim a happy birthday. He’s 41 – 17 months younger than me. In my head he’s still 8. LOL.  One of most significant stories this past week involved a conversation about how we prevent rape. Gun proponents argue that women need guns to shoot […]

Jimmy Kimmel on the “City Gaydar System” of Washington, PA

Well, Luke Ravenstahl was on Letterman. I guess Matt Staniszewski has followed in his footsteps by being the object of a Jimmy Kimmel bit. Sort of? I’ve received links to this video from a zillion friends. Props to Kimmel for the good pronounciation.

The survey also found 63 […]

Washington, PA Councilman Claims He Used Gay to Mean “Happy” in Email Test Message

In another fun example of Western PA’s descent into a red haze, we have this story from “Little Washington” PA – Councilman Matt Staniszewski sent out a mass email with the statement “Bryan is gay.” He admits he did it. The email was sent as part of a test run of a new emergency alert system. […]

Update: City of Pittsburgh Blocks Lesbian Blog (Again)

Lesbian, blocked website, Pittsburgh,

As you may remember, the City of Pittsburgh began blocking this blog in October 2012 for no apparent reason – the closest I had to an official explanation was “its just crappy web filters, Sue” from a former City employee. That’s called “scoffing” and its not a very constructive response.

Does Alleged Misconduct by Pgh Police Department Impact Local LGBTQ Community?

Yes. I’ll explain. Police relationships with the LGBTQ community have never been “good”, but certainly have been sliding downhill for the past several years. Unfortunately, there’s been an escalating “vicious cycle” of non-responsiveness to LGBTQ hate crimes in the City. Police don’t respond appropriately. People don’t report or follow through with reports. Crimes remain unsolved […]
